Help clients deal with critical data by designing technical architecture and data engineering systems...

Working at Thinking Machines

Thinking Machines is a technology consultancy building AI & data platforms to solve high impact problems for our clients. Our vision is for the Philippines to become a global hub for data science. To do that, we create data cultures, one organization at a time.

We're a company made up of intellectually curious, civic-minded, forever-learning individuals. We believe that great data science products are built with care for people, and the best way to drive inclusive innovation is to start with a diverse team.

Our field of work is incredibly dynamic, so we want to work with people who are committed to growing with us. We want to hire people who can demonstrate an ability to learn, then provide them with personalized coaching, growth opportunities, and a great working environment to get them to world-class.

Role Description

This job is a great fit for fresh graduates, career shifters, and people with 1-2 years of professional experience looking to hone their skills in both the technical and business aspects of Data and AI/ML engineering. This is a great career track for those gearing towards a technical leadership path, where both engineering and people skills are equally important.

As a Junior Enterprise Solutions Engineer, you will be working with our team to help design the technical architecture and implement data engineering systems of our biggest enterprise projects. Our enterprise clients deal with massive amounts of critical data that run with virtually zero downtime. As such, they have their own IT and technical teams that ensure everything works smoothly and securely at every level. Given our commitment to customer happiness, we have to make sure our technical decisions always meet their operational demands.

In this role, you will grow to be specifically attuned to the priorities and considerations of large corporations, making sure what we build for them is technically sound and can be fully integrated into their systems. Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Implement systems in data engineering projects - you will be working on implementing our infrastructure proposals with fellow engineers and tech managers from our clients. You must be equipped with adequate engineering knowledge and programming skills to set up environments, develop systems, and build data pipelines on the cloud.

  • Contribute to technical sales materials -  you will be working alongside the sales team to help win over the clients with our solutions in the early part of the business process. You will help prepare and write proposals, timelines, and slides for the clients. You must also understand deck storylines to create quality and effective sales presentations for clients.

  • Research and understand new data systems and technologies - you need to have enough critical thinking and technical proficiency to help our team analyze trade-offs between different technical solutions and technologies, and effectively recommend the best way forward given the client’s unique needs and constraints. Client engineering teams will respect your suggestions more if you know the nuances of what you’re talking about!

We know that navigating large corporations is very complex. As a company that loves its clients, we are looking for customer-centric problem solvers that will be committed to their success.

Since the data science space can get crazy, we are looking for someone who is up for any challenge and has the initiative to seek out ways to be useful. We move fast, and we expect you to keep up!

Requirements

We’re looking for someone who meets the following profile:

  • Enjoys solving engineering puzzles - Every client and every project will have its own engineering problems. Digging deep into which combination of available tools and platforms solves their specific issues should feel exciting for you!
  • Strong communication skills - Your will also communicate how Thinking Machines’ products and services integrate into the client's existing system. From pitching high-level plans to IT managers to attending technical war rooms with engineers, expect to be talking about our solutions at every level.
  • Quick learning agility - You're not expected to know everything, but we expect you to fill in the gaps quickly. Research and ask questions! You'll be part of a very talented team, make sure to learn something new every day!
  • Strong sense of initiative - There are many things to do from all sides! See something you can help with, but we haven't assigned you on? Do it.

High preference for candidates that have:

  • Software Engineering — Proficiency in at least one programming language (preferably Python). Knowing more is a bonus. Knowing too many but all poorly will make our eyes roll.
  • Code on the Cloud — Deploying code on Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Can design small-medium complexity systems
  • Have been a part of web development, data science, or ML engineering projects
  • Successfully led and managed teams or organizations
  • Have experience participating in public speaking, content writing, or case study competitions

Benefits and Perks

We offer the following compensation and benefits:

  • Competitive salary — the compensation amount is positively correlated with the difficulty of the job, relevant experience, fit, and skill factors.

  • Fully remote — due to the global pandemic, we have shifted to a fully remote company for the foreseeable future while we monitor the situation.

  • Individual professional development budget— an annual budget for conferences, training courses, books, and software is available to sharpen your skills and build new ones to help you grow in your role.

  • Full health benefits — generous health insurance package
